DIY Table Makeover

Table6

We got this table at Ikea awhile ago and I always had intentions of doing something with it, but that never happened. Until now!

I’m so pumped about how this turned out and it was so easy!

Here is how it all went down-

Supplies:

  • Table
  • 4x -2×6’s cut to 62 inches in length (home improvement store did this for me!) I think this is Douglas Fir
  • 2x – 1×3’s cut to 31 inches in length
  • Primer or Paint with Primer
  • Hand Sander- multi pack of sandpaper
  • Drill
  • Wood screws
  • Wood stain ( I used dark walnut and classic gray for a custom color)
  • Minwax Polycrylic (water-based)

I started off by lining up all my wood and screwing them together with the 1×3’s. Once that was done it was time for a whole lot of sanding.

Once you are satisfied with the feel of the wood after sanding-clean it up and prepare the surface for staining. Below is a photo after one coat of stain, I ended up doing two coats. I mixed two stain colors together to get my desired color- sky’s the limit on this so have fun with it.

Finally I finished up the table top with 3 coats of poly and it was gorgeous!

The most time consuming part was sanding the chairs and the table legs down and painting them. I went with a primer+paint combo thinking it would save time…not true. I ended up doing 3 coats to get nice coverage on everything. The last part is to remove the old table top and screw the new one on! Boom! you are now a table wizard.
