Monica Garwood – “Totoro”

Having just come back from Japan and visiting the Ghibli museum directly this gallery exhibit looks incredible. For those of you who are not familiar with Hayao Miyazaki he is a renowned Japanese animator and co-founder of Studio Ghibli. Miyazaki directed some of Studio Ghibli’s most beloved movies-Kiki’s Delivery ServicePrincess MononokeSpirited Away, and Ponyo, just to name a few. They are worth checking out if you have not seen them.

Hayao Miyazaki turned 76 last month, and late last year announced his return to Japanese animation as he began working a new feature length film – Boro the Caterpillar. In celebration of his accomplishments, the Spoke Art Gallery in San Francisco is hosting An Art Show Tribute to the Films of Hayao Miyazaki, with works from over 50 international artist working through a wide range of mediums.

The show will feature a diverse array of original paintings, sculpture and limited edition prints, the Miyazaki Art Show offers each artists’ perspective and interpretation of beloved characters and themes throughout Miyazaki’s films. The legendary director has always displayed a sense of adventure, reverence for nature, and portrayed strong female characters in his work. The contributing artists in this show were inspired by him and those ideals. This exhibition is sure to be one of a kind.

Kevan Hom – “Floating Travelers”

The Miyazaki-themed show has met with a particularly strong response; the Facebook event for the opening night on February 4th  had 2,913 confirmed attendees, with an additional 18,000 marked as “interested.” The show will run until February 25th and expect a wait when you arrive to see the show, but it will be worth it!

If you can’t make it to the show you can check out all of the work on Spoke Art’s website and you have the option to purchase. I know I have my eye on a couple of these pieces.
